Experimental approaches
To delineate the role of various host-derived or pathogen-encoded proteins in disease pathogenesis and characterize new protein biomarkers we apply the following experimental approaches:

1. Production of recombinant proteins in bacterial expression systems (small and medium scale)
2. Protein purification and characterization using affinity-based matrices and SDS-PAGE analysis
3. Functional analysis of complement activity in ELISA-based assays (pathway-specific assays)
4. Blood separation techniques
5. Bacterial culturing, survival and cell phagocytosis assays
6. Various cell-based assays for assessing cell proliferation, cancer cell clonogenic survival, cell migratory and invasive activity
7. Flow cytometry-based detection of activation markers on various primary cells and cell lines
8. In vivo models of disease (i.e., bacterial infection models)
